Laporte: county land, county rules
Laporte sits along the Cache la Poudre River next to northwest Fort Collins, but it is not part of any city. The rules for junk on a Laporte property come from Larimer County.
An old town with no town government
The county’s Laporte Area Plan of January 2004 describes Laporte as an unincorporated town of about 2,600 people, with roughly 700 more nearby, and notes that it briefly served as the county seat. It also records that Camp Collins moved downstream after a June 1864 flood, with the county seat following five years later.
What the county enforces
Larimer County Code Compliance works across all unincorporated areas, and its guidance, retrieved September 27, 2026, says outdoor storage of junk and debris is not allowed: appliances, car parts, old furniture and scrap that blight the area must leave the property or go inside a building. Under the county’s rubbish ordinance, when the county removes rubbish itself the owner pays the cost plus a 10% collection penalty, certified to the county treasurer and collected like taxes.
Getting it out
The county points residents in or near Fort Collins to the Central Diversion & Transfer Station on West Trilby Road for household loads. On rural lots, long driveways, livestock gates and soft ground can shape the price as much as the pile, so describe the approach when you ask for a quote.
