Junk removal in Fort Collins changed in August 2026, when the county landfill on Taft Hill Road closed to public loads and a transfer station on West Trilby Road took over. Follow your pile from the garage to the right gate.

The August 2026 change
The landfill closed to the public. The gate moved to Trilby.
For a load you drive yourself, or the question to ask a hauler, the destination changed this summer. Here is where things stand, from the county and City pages retrieved September 27, 2026.
The county transfer station
Larimer County tells residents in or near Fort Collins and Loveland to use the Central Diversion & Transfer Station at 2388 West Trilby Road. Its disposal page lists hours of Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and names mattresses, couches, furniture, refrigerators, carpet, tires and TVs among the items it takes.
Every load has to be fully covered and tied down. The county enforces that by charging double, so a tarp and two straps cost far less than arriving with an open bed.
Timberline and the curb
The City’s Timberline Recycling Center at 1903 S. Timberline Rd. handles hard-to-recycle items such as electronics, scrap metal and clean wood, behind a $5 entry fee. It turns away anything with Freon and offers no pickup, so the unloading is yours.
Homes on the City’s contracted trash service with Republic Services get two free bulk items a year, for pieces under 60 pounds with no side longer than six feet. Heavier or longer items cost extra. For a nightstand or two dining chairs, that may be all the help you need.

A hauler prices mostly by how much of the truck your things fill, then adjusts for weight, stairs and items that carry their own disposal fee. The ranges below are for budgeting. They are illustrations, not a survey of Fort Collins companies.

Public fees sit underneath those numbers. At the county transfer station a pickup-truck load is a $37 flat fee, a mattress is $40 and an appliance with Freon is $36, according to the 2026 fee schedule updated June 29, 2026. A gate fee is never the cost of carrying a sofa up from a basement.
The way out of the house
Stairs, alley, street: the carry sets the labor.
Two jobs with the same pile can differ by hours. The difference is almost always the path from the room to the truck, so describe it as carefully as the items.
Inside
Count the stairs and the turns, measure the narrowest door, and name the heavy pieces: a chest freezer, a treadmill, a piano, a hot tub on the back deck. Set aside anything Colorado keeps out of the trash, like electronics and tires, so the load can be split at the curb instead of at the gate.
Leave refrigerant lines, gas connections and spa wiring alone. Tell the contractor what is still connected, and let the right trade disconnect it before moving day.
Outside
A dumpster, storage pod or container placed in the City right-of-way needs an encroachment permit; for a minor one the City lists a $10 application fee and a $10 inspection fee. Holding a public parking space to load calls for an obstruction permit from Parking Services.
Trash carts stay out of view on non-collection days and go to the curb no more than 12 hours before pickup, under the City’s code compliance rules. The same page lists accumulated junk as a nuisance the City can clear and bill to the owner.
Fort Collins and the towns around it

An address near Fort Collins does not settle who picks up the trash. Inside city limits, Republic Services runs the City’s contracted program. Laporte is unincorporated county land. Windsor, Wellington and Severance rely on private haulers, Loveland runs its own service, and each town sets its own clean-up rules.

What do Republic’s two free bulk items cover?
The City describes two free bulk items a year for households on the contracted service, each under 60 pounds with no dimension over six feet. Anything larger or heavier costs extra; Republic schedules the pickup.
Are the price ranges here real quotes?
